Legislative Democrats Pass Bloated Budget

SACRAMENTO (June 13, 2025) – Assemblymember Diane Dixon (R-Newport Beach) provided a statement on the Legislature’s Budget deal:

“Today I voted against the two-party budget deal the Assembly and Senate Democrats negotiated without a single Republican at the table. This proposal takes one step forward and several steps back. It is unsustainable and spends $5.5 billion more than the Governor’s budget proposal. We need to prioritize taxpayer dollars and be more rigorous about cuts.

While I am pleased to see this proposal provides better outcomes for In Home Supportive Service workers, I have major concerns it falls well short of the $400 million funding goal for the successful implementation of Prop 36. Nearly 70 percent of voters were loud and clear in their desire to combat crime in our neighborhoods and ensure people are receiving the rehabilitation they need to address substance abuse.

This budget bill also spends an additional $2.5 billion, reducing the rainy day fund. We should be able to create a balanced budget without spending down our reserves. Californians pay some of the highest taxes in the country, yet the data shows we are struggling to successfully take care of the Californians that live here now. This budget is disappointing to say the least, as it fails to address critical public safety funding and lacks significant funding for wildfire prevention.”

The Legislature must pass a budget by the constitutional deadline of June 15. Senate Bill 101 is considered the primary Budget-in-Chief bill. For next steps, the Senate and Assembly Democrats will enter negotiations with the Governor.
