RE: Request for Support for FY27 Community Project Funding, Golden West College – Tutoring and Learning Center

Dear Senator Padilla, Senator Schiff and Congressman Min,

I am writing to support Golden West College’s proposal to upgrade its Tutoring and Learning Center. This initiative is a timely and strategic investment in student achievement, particularly for those navigating STEM disciplines and gateway courses.

Golden West College serves approximately 19,000 students each academic year, and the Tutoring and Learning Center has already proven itself to be an invaluable resource. In the 2024-25 academic year, the TLC received 11,024 student visits, supported 2,955 tutoring sessions, and served 2,515 unique students. Students who utilized Embedded Tutors experienced significant gains in course success, particularly in foundational STEM subjects.

Improvements include redesigned study spaces and updated technology hardware to enhance the tutoring and study environment and support student well-being. This investment advances Golden West College’s goal of closing gaps and improving Math and STEM student success.

I strongly encourage full and favorable consideration of this proposal. The return on investment in student achievement, retention, and engagement will be substantial and will reverberate across the campus and the broader community.

Sincerely,

Diane B. Dixon Assemblymember, 72nd District
