SACRAMENTO – On the first day of the 2024 Legislative Session Assemblymember Diane Dixon (R-Newport Beach) introduced legislation addressing electric bicycles, or e-bikes.

“Today I introduced a transportation package related to e-bikes. When I was running for office I promised my communities that I would address public safety concerns over e-bikes. My goal is to ensure people can have fun safely, whether riding an e-bike, driving a car or simply crossing the street as a pedestrian.”

The package is made up of two bills, AB 1773 and AB 1774.  AB 1773 will allow local jurisdictions more control over their beach boardwalks as it relates to rules and regulation regarding e-bikes. AB 1774 focuses on limiting the high speeds of e-bikes by prohibiting the sale of devices that can modify the speed capability of an e-bike.

“These bills don’t ban e-bikes. But they do address several key concerns many of our communities have with them relating to local control and speed of e-bikes.”

Next, the bills will be referred to a policy committee for a hearing.
