ASSEMBLYMEMBER DIANE DIXON SIGNS ON TO LETTER TO SENATOR FEINSTEIN AND SENATOR PADILLA REGARDING “MIDDLE-CLASS TAX REFUND”

Dear Senator Feinstein and Senator Padilla,

We are writing to you today on behalf of millions of Californian families seeking financial relief from the IRS.

As you know, the State of California issued a one-time payment called the “Middle-Class Tax Refund” to provide financial relief to Californians suffering from high inflation and the rising cost of living.

The State of California ensured that recipients of the Refund would not have to include their payments as taxable income on their state returns.

However, these same recipients, many of whom are on fixed incomes, were devastated to learn that under federal law their payments are considered taxable income.

These funds came directly from the state; it is wholly inappropriate that money designed to help our constituents during their time of need will go straight into the federal government’s hands.

In these difficult times, we strongly urge you to take swift legislative action to allow Californians from across this state to keep more of their hard-earned money at a time when they need it most.

We appreciate your willingness to engage on this issue and look forward to coming to a swift

resolution for the benefit of our constituents.
